Focus on …. Justin Flack
Director of Contracts
Justin’s cheerful and energetic nature is obvious when you visit a site. His friendly attitude extends to the subcontractors he manages but he has a keen eye for detail to keep builds on time and to contract specification.
What brought you to Carnegie Group?
“My education is in mechanical engineering, and I was previously working as a site manager in residential refurbishment and then became self-employed doing similar work. I’d known David for about 10 years so when he contacted me to utilise my skillset in the role at Carnegie Group as Contracts Manager, it was an obvious move for me. I have now progressed to Contracts Director and have obtained an NVQ in Construction Contracting Operations Management.”
Tell us a bit about what you do day to day.
“I’m responsible for ensuring that design briefs and specifications are programmed on site, managing the contractors on a daily basis and longer-term scheduling to keep projects on track. I also maintain client communication so that they’re aware of what is happening on their project. Monitoring the quality of the subcontractor work, to ensure specifications are met and work is to a high standard. I also confirm material specs and place orders.”
What keeps you motivated when on site?
“I love what I do, also the variety means every day is different. I work with a range of contractors and I’m always in contact with several people. I’m a problem solver which is a very useful quality in this business! Being part of a team is motivating too.”
If you weren’t in construction you’d be?
“A mechanic for a rally team.”
And out of work what’s the story?
I love running & cycling round the beautiful Surrey Hills, eating out with the family and having more quality time now my boys are getting older.
Final question, what’s your favourite song?
Anything indie, punk, grebo – if it’s live I like it.
So, we know where to go for some lively company at a gig and actually I must remember to get him to have a look at my dodgy fanbelt, he’s clearly a man of many talents!
